| Transport in the Unsaturated Zone |
|
The dynamics of water and matter transport from the soil surface to the groundwater affect the quantity and quality of subterranean water stores. Besides transport, retention, release and modification/decomposition are the main processes of matter transport. Therefore, matter transport in the unsaturated zone is a central issue of groundwater protection as well as soil protection. Main topics of our actual activities within the frame of matter transport in the unsaturated zone are:
Field experiments | Onsite measurements of water flow and mater transport at different temporal and spatial scales contribute to assess sustainable groundwater management and calibrate computer models. Simulation models | We use simulation models to evaluate natural processes and - based on scenario analysis - elaborate solutions for agricultural water management problems. We have developped the matter transport simulation model STOTRASIM, which is now constantly updated and improved. Risk evaluation | From bringing together results of field experiments, laboratory analysis and simulation models and set within the frame of regional landuse, climate and agricultural management practices we assess pollution risks of groundwater.
